Earth Day at Buckswood was marked by action, as students from the Forms 1–4 and Lower Sixth took part in a campus-wide litter pick. Covering the entire school grounds, from the stables to the vineyard and across to the tennis courts and football pitches, students worked together. This initiative helped to make an immediate, visible difference, showing how small actions can create a powerful collective impact.

The litter pick is just one example of how sustainability is embedded into the Buckswood experience. Guided by the school’s Sustainability Pillar, students are encouraged not only to learn about environmental responsibility, but to actively put it into practice in daily life.

This commitment is supported by a wide range of initiatives across the school. Buckswood is part of a Renewable Energy Project of the Year initiative, recognising its multi-source approach to sustainability, including solar power and biomass heating systems.

The school’s 102 solar panels generate enough energy to power over 5,500 homes for a day and provide 20% of Buckswood’s hot water using only sunlight! Alongside this, a highly efficient biomass system supplies heat to 18 buildings on campus, using locally sourced renewable materials and significantly reducing reliance on fossil fuels.

Sustainability also extends to waste management. Through food waste-to-energy processes, Buckswood turns everyday waste into a valuable resource. Between September 2025 and March 2026, 88 bins of food waste were collected, processing nearly 8,000 kg of waste, generating over 2,100 kWh of renewable energy, and saving 3.67 tonnes of CO₂.

In addition, advanced water and air filtration systems, including a wastewater treatment plant and reed bed filtration, help minimise environmental impact while maintaining high sustainability standards across campus.

Together, these efforts show that sustainability at Buckswood is not a single initiative, but a whole-school commitment. Events like the Earth Day litter pick empower students to take ownership, while the school’s infrastructure ensures those values are supported in practice.

By combining student action with innovative systems, Buckswood is not only creating a cleaner campus, but helping to shape environmentally conscious leaders for the future.
