Student Spotlight: Adebayo’s Journey with AI at Buckswood
At Buckswood, we are always looking for ways to integrate technology into learning in a meaningful and responsible way. This term, we had the opportunity to speak with Adebayo, a Form 5 student from Nigeria, about his experiences using AI in education since joining Buckswood in September 2024.
A New Chapter in Learning
Adebayo arrived in the UK in September and quickly settled into his studies, focusing on Business, PE, and Triple Science. As a passionate footballer and an Arsenal fan, he dreams of a future in the sport. But beyond the pitch, he’s found another unexpected game-changer in his education—Artificial Intelligence.
Before coming to Buckswood, Adebayo had heard of AI but never used it himself. His perception was that many students relied too heavily on it for their work. However, his views changed when he was introduced to AI in Mr. Lawless’ Triple Science class.
AI as a Learning Tool, Not a Shortcut
Rather than using AI as a substitute for thinking, Adebayo was taught how to engage with it as a learning partner. “We were encouraged to have discussions with AI,” he explains. “Instead of just getting answers, we ask AI about topics we’re studying, and it generates questions for us to answer. Then, we get feedback to improve our responses.”
This interactive approach has helped him refine his academic skills, particularly in Business, Science, and PE. “I know the topics, but I wasn’t always structuring my answers the way the mark scheme expects,” he admits. “AI prompts me to develop stronger responses and gives me an excellent revision tool. It also helps me catch up on topics I may have missed.”
Responsible AI Use: Lessons for Every Student
While AI has been a great asset, Adebayo recognizes the importance of using it wisely. “You can’t just copy from AI. You also can’t assume everything it says is correct. Most importantly, you can’t let it do your thinking for you.”
At Buckswood, we emphasise the ethical use of AI, ensuring that students develop critical thinking skills alongside technological literacy. Adebayo’s journey highlights the potential of AI when used correctly—to enhance learning, build confidence, and prepare students for the future.
