Prefect System
At Buckswood, our prefect system is designed to cultivate leadership and responsibility among students, reminding them of the aphorism: “All power corrupts; absolute power corrupts absolutely.” Our prefects are taught that the most effective way to lead is by example, embodying the values and standards we uphold at Buckswood.
Role and Function
Prefects serve as vital links between the student body and the faculty. They work closely with the Senior Management Team (SMT), regularly meeting to discuss routine school matters and address specific issues. Their oversight extends to House Captains and other prefects, ensuring that all duties are performed diligently and that high standards are maintained throughout the school.
Duties and Responsibilities
Prefects play a crucial role in the day-to-day operations of the school. Their responsibilities include maintaining order and ensuring proper conduct among students, particularly during school assemblies, breaks, and other collective gatherings. They are ambassadors of discipline and order, tasked with upholding the ethos of Buckswood at all times.
Selection Process
The selection of prefects is a thorough process involving the entire SMT and takes place at the end of Lower Sixth. Candidates are evaluated through a structured system that includes a ballot and voting, based on criteria outlined in the school prefect reference form. This ensures that only the most suitable students are chosen to represent their peers and assist in the leadership of the school community.
By fostering a sense of duty and leadership, our prefect system prepares students for future challenges, teaching them the value of integrity and responsibility in positions of authority.
