When Dexter first played against Buckswood School’s Under-16 football team in 2024, he had no idea that this single match could change the direction of his football and education journey forever.
Having played for local clubs since the age of six, Dexter has always looked for opportunities to challenge himself and continue improving. Following the game, he was approached by Buckswood’s Head of Football, who introduced him to the school’s football programme and the opportunities available, both on and off the pitch. After visiting the school, the decision became an easy one.
“Once I’d visited Buckswood and seen the amazing opportunities it had to offer, I knew it was somewhere I wanted to be.”
Settling into a New Environment
Like many students joining a new school, Dexter admits it took time to adjust to a different environment. However, the support he received from coaches and teachers helped him settle quickly.
While completing his GCSE studies, he trained with Buckswood’s Under-16 squad, allowing him to develop his football alongside his academic education. The combination of structured coaching and a supportive school community gave him the confidence to grow in both areas.
Growing as a Goalkeeper
Since joining Buckswood, Dexter believes his development as a sportsman has accelerated significantly.
As a goalkeeper, access to position-specific coaching has been one of the biggest factors in his progress. Alongside regular team training and competitive fixtures, dedicated goalkeeper sessions have enabled him to focus on refining the technical aspects of his game.
“Having dedicated goalkeeper coaching has made a huge difference. I’ve been able to work on the areas I wanted to improve, and it’s really helped my confidence.”
Working with Buckswood’s coaching staff has also helped him develop qualities beyond technical ability. Leadership, discipline, tactical awareness and consistency have all become important parts of his game, alongside noticeable improvements in his shot-stopping, distribution and decision-making.
Learning from Higher-Level Competition
One of Dexter’s proudest achievements came at the beginning of this academic year when he earned promotion to the Buckswood Under-19 First Team.
Training and competing alongside older players from a variety of backgrounds has challenged him to raise his own standards and mature both as a footballer and as an individual.
The team has enjoyed an impressive season, reaching two national semi-finals and winning the County Cup final. These experiences have provided valuable lessons in performing under pressure and competing in high-stakes matches.
Beyond Football
Although football remains a major focus, Dexter says Buckswood has also helped him grow personally and as a student.
Studying A-Levels in Psychology, Physical Education and English, he has found an excellent balance between academic study and elite sport. His academic dedication was recently celebrated at the school’s Sports and Speech Day, where he received two awards: one for his outstanding work in Psychology and another for English. At the same time, the school’s international community has enabled him to build friendships with students from around the world and develop greater confidence socially.
“I’ve made some great friendships here at Buckswood and become much more confident. Being around people from different backgrounds has helped me grow both on and off the pitch.”
Looking to the Future
Looking ahead, Dexter hopes to study Sports Psychology at university whilst remaining involved in football and continuing to gain experience within the game.
His journey reflects the opportunities available at Buckswood: combining ambitious academic study with high-performance sport, supported by specialist coaching and a community that encourages students to develop as confident, well-rounded individuals.
For Dexter, choosing Buckswood has been about far more than improving as a goalkeeper. It has been an opportunity to grow as a student, a teammate and a young person preparing for the next stage of his journey.
