Schemes of Work

General Statement of Curriculum (To be read in conjunction with all relevant school polices- https://www.buckswood.co.uk/administration/policies/)

The school has continued to progress in many areas: staff retention; scholar retention; growth in scholar numbers; plant improvement, with new buildings (classrooms and accommodation) being added each year; university placement success; the breadth of nationalities represented in the school; development of new courses; the offering of study visits, half-term trips and overseas experiences, and in the provision of extra-curricular activities.

 

The school curriculum offers both breadth and flexibility, which reflects the composition of the scholar body in terms of its levels of both academic and English Language ability. The classes are relatively small and the focus is on each child fulfilling his or her potential whilst living in and contributing to a small, vibrant, happy, international academic community.

 

The emphasis is on each child achieving potential through hard work and support. The school is non-selective and receives scholars at all entry points from around 40 different nationalities – each with a different school system. The school welcomes, and provides a safe and stable environment for our many international scholars, who may well be thousands of miles away from home, non-native speakers of English, spanning a wide range of academic ability and who may have had no exposure to the traditional modus operandi of a UK boarding school. The school has increased its number of British scholars on roll each year because of its efforts to make the school as affordable as possible to local families through the awarding of many day bursaries (based on financial status). Our overseas scholars enjoy studying in Britain alongside British scholars, who in turn, find the spirit of internationalism to be an important part of school life.

 

Curriculum Planning

There are 3 main levels for planning:

  • Upper Level: Subject statements (aims and objectives).
  • Middle Level: Schemes of Work.
  • Lower Level: Daily Lesson Plans.

Subject Statements

These must give an overview of the subject syllabus giving the aims and objectives of the course to be followed.. It should be a short overview of “why students should pick this course as opposed to another”. It’s our subject teacher’s manifesto!

 

Schemes of Work

At the start of each year work schemes of work must be completed, by teaching staff, for each subject that they teach. These must be handed to The Head of Teaching and Learning before the start of term. The schemes of work will, then, be published on the VLE and available to parents and scholars.

 

Purple Files

These form a curriculum guide for each subject.

 

The Red/Purple file will be used for both internal and external inspectors. The following must be included:

 

Examinations to be sat during the year (codes and boards).

 

  • The subject statement.
  • Proposed schemes of work.
  • Examination syllabus.
  • Internal examination papers.
  • External examination papers.
  • Any other information regarding the subject.
