GCSE 2 Year Course

The two year GCSE programme begins in Form IV (year 10), and is made up of 6 core subjects that everyone must take and a further 3 subjects in which they wish to specialise.

All scholars on the 2 year GCSE programme must take 6 core subjects – English Language, English Literature, IGCSE Mathematics, Science (combined, double-award), and a foreign language (either French, Mandarin Chinese or Spanish) if their English is deemed to be of sufficient level.

Scholars who need extra English support will have English lessons instead of the language option and have the option of earning  certification in ICT in the second year of the course. Non-native speakers are taught English Language separately from native speakers.

All scholars in Form IV must also select 3 further subjects, divided into 3 option blocks. These include further languages (French, Spanish, Mandarin), Graphics, Art, History, ICT, Global Citizenship, Physical Education, Business Studies, Additional Science, Media Studies and Religious Studies.

For the budding Scientist, triple science is available as an option, which will result in them earning 3 distinct science GCSE qualifications when taken alongside core double award Science. Non-native English speakers can also continue to study their own language and lessons are arranged outside of the regular curriculum for them.

GCSE Assessments

In the second year of the course, public examinations are sat in May and June which will determine their final results in each of the GCSE courses studied. Over the course of the two years, each pupil will be regularly assessed and our weekly report system gives parents and students a clear indication of progress. A scholar is considered to have passed their GCSEs if they earn a minimum of 5 passes (Grade A* – C) including English and Mathematics. Successful completion of the GCSE programme then allows the scholar to move on to study A Levels or International Baccalaureate in the Buckswood 6th form.

Depending on the year you join Buckswood, the 1 year GCSE programme may be a more suitable option for you.
