CONGRATULATIONS TO ALL THOSE BUCKSWOOD STUDENTS WHO PARTICIPATED IN THE HASTINGS MUSIC FESTIVAL

Out of the 62 students that take private music lessons here at Buckswood 42 of these took part in the Hastings Music festival. The variety of performances this year was spectacular with John playing Rachmaninov's 2nd Piano concerto winning the open piano recital competition.

The bag pipe band won the World Music class award and some of our youngest students, Mia Mandry and Olivia Streeten were complimented on their duet. The school rock band 'Ashes' came away with a £50 prize and to complete our festival season Nina Kozhevnikova was awarded the Muriel Jobson Trophy for "the most promising singer between the ages of 15 and 18".

Congratulations to all performers, including those who participated in the dance and drama sections and thank you to the Hastings Music Festival committee for such a great competition this year - Music is an international language and is a medium through which different people can come together and enjoy.

Here at Buckswood we are so proud of our students young and old for getting up on the stage and giving of their best.

The creative and expressive arts play a large part in Buckswood life with the Music & Art departments holding regular concerts, workshops, exhibitions and gallery evenings. Public performance or exhibition is held up as the target for all students. Private instrumental and voice tuition is available on a weekly basis.

The Music Building has been refurbished and fitted with a DJ mixing suite. The Buckswood choir gives termly public concerts. The Art & Design studio has recently been extended and provides a wonderful, inspirational working environment. Buckswood has a strong tradition of A Level students entering art colleges in the UK.

Recording Studio

Click here for recordings On Wednesday 30 September the Buckswood Recording Studio opened for the first time. It was the brainwave of Mr Sutton who decided that all of the students, (and their parents), could benefit from hearing their voices and their musical abilities recorded and played back to them.

It has been a fantastic Michaelmas Term full of everything from absolutely heart stopping musical performances to dramatic presentations, (there are some future actors there for certain), and some excellent comedy moments – both intentional and not. This has continued this term.

Angelo Falsini, a Form 1 student who has not yet grown to his full height, had the engineer, John Ewen and myself entertained as he gradually crouched down as he read the script to the bottom of the page. He hadn’t realised that you need to be close to the microphone! You will recognise Angelo in the picture.

Many of you have got in touch to let us know what you think. One student told me that her parents were ‘delighted’ with her recording. Mrs Kollmeier, Florian’s mother said ‘We very much appreciate the way you encourage young people to present themselves thus giving them self confidence.’ Julien Schmit’s mother said, ‘Thank you very much for Julien's recording on the search for the North West Passage, which I have been listening to with great pleasure. Of course I am looking forward to receiving more of those recordings.’ Mrs Allen, Jake’s mother said, ‘thank you so much for the lovely recording Jake made, it is superb. ‘

Overall a very interesting experience that we hope to continue and expand.

Please keep your comments coming in as we love to hear from you about your child’s talents.
