Being a junior boarder
All Buckswood boarders receive the unique care and attention that only such a family-oriented school can offer but for our junior boys and girls aged 10 to 14, we go that little bit further.
Our dedicated Junior Housemaster and Junior Housemistress are specifically chosen for their ability to help, guide and care for the youngest pupils, whatever the situation.
The junior boys live in the main School House, which also happens be the Headmaster’s residence, so it is a place of great importance. Mr. Sutton’s office door is always open and so students are encouraged to speak to him whenever they have the need to do so. The junior boys will enjoy looking after the Headmaster’s dog, Wisdom and then in the evening a group could be invited to Mr. Sutton’s office for hot chocolate in front of the fire. Here, in a relaxed setting, they can discuss any issues or concerns and Mr. Sutton can guide and advise each boy accordingly.
We prefer to dorm our junior boys and girls in groups of 3, 4 or 5 together, making the whole experience more fun and more like a family situation. The girls live off campus in the charming Guestling Hall residence. Safe and secure, this house overlooks the sea and is home to some 45 girls and live-in Housemistresses. The junior girls have their own schedule of activities, as their academic programme is not yet as intense as older students studying GCSE, A Level or IB!
All of the junior boarders are appointed a senior student as their mentor or “Argonaut” and this student will act as an older brother or sister, a confidante and a role model. After all, Mr. Sutton can’t do it all by himself!
One of the keys to successfully boarding such young children is to have them occupied at all times, so the staff and senior students invest a lot of time dreaming up trips, activities and challenges that will keep them all busy. Like the older students, the juniors are still encouraged to be independent and to learn how to look after themselves. This gives them a real headstart on the others when they graduate to senior school.
We know that coming all the way to England to board at such a tender age is daunting but we also have many years’ experience of dealing with this, so there is no better, safer more caring environment for your child to live (outside of the family home, of course!)
