Being a Day Student

A day in the life of a day student

"Every day, I look forward to my school day at Buckswood because the ambience is phenomenal and interaction with people from all walks of life gives you a worldlier outlook. The school day starts with a form period at 8:45, where our form teacher takes a register and reads out important messages.

The first lesson starts at 9:05.  There are 8 lessons of 40 minutes each in a school day, and not more than 18 students in a class, which makes interaction so much better, and understanding of the subject so much clearer. We have two breaks and a lunch break every day.  Our school has recently been awarded with the “Food for Life” Bronze Award, in order to gain an award of this magnitude, Partnership officials must be satisfied that schools serve seasonal school meals that are at least 75% freshly prepared by a well-trained school cook.   During meals, emphasis is placed on table manners and dinning room etiquette, which equip us with necessary social skills to dine with confidence at formal dinners and functions.  A head of table serves us in the old-fashioned manner, which means no queuing for food.

From16:00 to 17:00 we have compulsory prep back in our form class, which is great as it means that most of my homework has been done, leaving me more time at home for relaxation and time with family and friends.  Home time is usually at 17:00 but many of us stay on to participate in activities or sport. There is also Access Time, where students have the opportunity to have a one on one consultation with a teacher on their specific subject matter.  I really benefit from this as it gives me more clarity on the work covered in a lesson.  A formal assembly is held every Friday to end a wonderful week at school and first class effort and attainment are recognized through the award of Headmaster’s Commendations.

Buckswood is like a small village with lots of open space, which really is great as it makes moving from one class to another more exhilarating as you are walking in the fresh air (well, most of the time!) and you’re getting exercise without even noticing!!!"
