Tonia Barton
![]()
Tonia joined Buckswood in 2008 as Head of IT from Uplands Community College, where she ran the IT department. Prior to this she taught at a variety of state and private schools in Surrey and London however her career has not always been in teaching.
Her intention, having gained a degree in History, was to qualify as a teacher however at the time this avenue was not open to her and so she picked an industry where she always knew there would be employment totally undaunted by the fact she knew nothing about it. Welcome to the world of IT! She gained a wealth of experience in the industry in a variety of roles from Computer Operator, working on a Helpdesk, Change Management administrator until she progressed to work as an IT trainer. Tonia gained Microsoft professional trainer status whilst working with a specialist IT training company. For two years she ran business courses on Microsoft applications but was headhunted for a challenging role with legal firm Allen & Overy. Major assignments included working in their New York, Tokyo, Brussels and Warsaw offices. Following this she took a secondment to Singapore as office manager, where she recruited her successor before returning to the UK.
With these achievements behind her, and taking another leap into the unknown, she took a year out to retrain and gain a PGCE qualification as an IT teacher. She has never regretted this decision.
