After having worked in London as a financial advisor and then for the civil service in my twenties I decided to venture into teaching. I started as an EFL teacher in England then Germany where I lived in Frankfurt for nine years, teaching in many of the commercial banks and companies based there. In teaching English I learnt a lot about the companies that I taught in, as I was constantly getting my students to describe their jobs and responsibilities to me, these were areas such as banking, medical research, manufacturing, stock trading, nuclear power stations.

One thing that I noticed that kept recurring was the mathematics involved in each case. I had always been interested in maths but had drifted away from it.
After Germany I moved to Thailand where I taught classes of up to 60 students at a time in a large secondary school.

This was quite a challenge at times but often fun and I got a good understanding of the real Thai culture that is not really seen by most visitors. After two years of living there I noticed my mind returning to maths and its challenges. I decided to return to the UK and study it properly at university.

I was lucky enough to land a part-time job teaching maths at Buckswood school while I studied mathematics at the Open University. This was quite a challenge again as juggling a job while studying a degree can be exhausting at times.

When I eventually finished I joined the school full-time and have now been here for nine years. I love teaching maths, it opens so many doors to other areas of life, be that academic or vocational. It’s particularly enjoyable when students who thought they were bad at the subject realise that they really can do it, and do it well. They often become the best students, if they work hard that is.
