  Don't have a lie-in - have a KiP
Knowledge is Power
The Knowledge is Power programme exists to widen the scope of our student's understanding of issues beyond the classroom. The programme has a number of formats, including lectures from visiting experts, field trips to learn about topics such as architecture and community service as well as discussion groups on philosophy and even garden design!

The ultimate goal of the programme is to allow our students to access many different sources of knowledge, thus empowering them to make decisions in their lives and to better understand the world in which we live today - in essence, to understand that 'Knowledge is Power'!

This year's KiP programme builds on the success of previous years, with a wide range of planned activities. Students will learn about the holocaust from a survivor of the Bergen-Belsen camp, they will be visiting the local town of Winchelsea to learn about town planning over time and the importance of wine cellars and will also go to Charlston, the home of the Bloomsbury set to learn about an important group of English writers.

The programme will also present ideas on community service, which will involve a trip to help serve the local community as well as workshops on the importance of treating all with respect. As part of our rounded education, we will also be participating in the 'Standing Tall' programme, where students will learn the correct manners and protocols for getting ahead and excelling in the professional world as well as building their self-confidence and interview skills.

There will be regular philosophy workshops, exploring the ideas of well-known philosophers such as Nietzsche, Schopenhauer and Kant as well as learning about the general idea of philosophy and how it applies to life.

The KiP programme recognizes that knowledge is not only mental and we have planned visits from sporting figures to give knowledge about what it takes to make it in the world of professional sports and the importance of good health and nutrition.

Students will liaise with the school kitchens as well and spend time alongside the school chefs on occasion, learning what it takes to keep 400+ people fed on a daily basis - useful knowledge, should they ever decide to go into catering or the hotel trade! Keeping fit and healthy also involves a relaxing environment and the KiP programme will work with a local garden design firm to help develop the school campus and to design a small meditation garden for students to enjoy. They will also visit local gardens of interest for ideas and inspiration.

There are lectures from explorers as well as cinematographers, the military, police and local conservation groups. Students will learn about diseases such as Parkinson's and of the importance of understanding such things fully before passing judgement on those afflicted with such conditions. The KiP programme is designed to interest as many different students as possible and we are always open to suggestions from students and parents alike for things to add! At Buckswood, we believe that knowledge is gained in many different ways - not just in the classroom.

The Knowledge is Power programme is designed to get our students to think more about the world around them and to realise that there are a wide range of professions and paths that their lives can take them along. We want our students to become lifelong learners and part of this is exposing them to many different ideas and opportunities, so that they can make the best-informed decisions as they move through life.
