New Accommodation at Buckswood

Constantly striving to provide class-leading standards of education, Buckswood School is delighted to announce the next exciting development of boarding improvements.

Ready for the start of the new academic year in September 2011, the re-development of Rowling House (named after Harry Potter author J.K. Rowling, see map above) takes Buckswood’s accommodation to the next level. They will consist solely of single rooms for 6th Form boys, many of which will be en suite.

The campus, located in beautiful south coast countryside and yet just 90 minutes  from London, offers a huge range of facilities and quality accommodation in all of the lodges. We firmly believe that for students to fulfill their potential and succeed academically, a friendly, comfortable, structured and supportive ‘family’ environment is key.

OTHER SCHOOL HOUSES

What’s In a Name?

Although the new Rowling House will be the standard bearer for Buckswood accommodation, the other lodges are in no way ‘economy class’.

Wellls House, named after the author H.G. Wells (War of the Worlds), who lived in nearby Kent, sits on the west side of the campus, close to the school library and 6th Form Study Centre. It is home to 36 boys, with the middle school (GCSE) sharing twin rooms and 6th Form (A Level) students in single rooms.

Milne and Kipling Houses are tucked away in the trees at the east side of the campus, close to the main School House, where the Headmaster lives and also overlooking the vineyard.

Milne House, named after the author A.A. Milne (Winnie The Pooh, whose home was in nearby Ashdown Forest), is home to 22 boys in twin rooms and is the home of the Head of Boarding & Sports, Mr Callaghan.

Kipling House is named after Rudyard Kipling (The Jungle Book), who lived in the Sussex village of Burwash. Although structurally very similar to Milne, it has its own unique character and is mainly twin rooms.

The School House itself is also a boys’ boarding house, as well as being Mr Sutton’s residence. As it is a very old house not designed as a boarding house, the rooms vary from singles for the seniors, up to 4 or 5 sharing for the youngest students (ages 11 to 13). It is a house with creaking staircases, low doors and many twists and turns but it has a unique atmosphere. It is also home to the most senior student in the school, Head of School.

Eleven of the most senior and longest serving female students live in the Rose and Apple Tree Cottages, situated at the heart of the campus, which also serves as the Matron’s home. Living here is one of the privileges enjoyed by our Upper 6th Form girls before they leave the school and head to university.

Last but certainly not least there is Guestling Hall, the magnificent girls’ house where some 45 of our girls live. Situated off campus, the house is a safe, warm and friendly haven for our girls and allows them the benefits of ‘going home’ at the end of every day and getting away from the school. The live-in house staff care for the girls and provide additional activities and trips exclusively for them, over and above the huge range offered on campus.

Of course none of the houses would function without dedicated, experienced and professional staff. Buckswood is lucky to have a strong team of Housemasters & Housemistresses, each of whom brings with them their own set of skills and characteristics, so the students have a range of boarding staff to help them through life.
